So I was expecting today to be like a 10 minutes session but it turned out to be one of the longest sessions I have had so far. This senior citizen had never used a phone or any type of technology before except a pc computer she owns that she barely ever uses. When she called in, she said “oh I just need help deciding what to buy.” I was confused but then realized she needed help deciding between a technology device that’s portable. I was supposed to help her decide what to buy but she came in with a Samsung Tablet… she was surprisingly decent at using it because she went over to her “girlfriend’s house” and they connected the tablet to the internet and they were learning how to use it together. I have never actually talked to a senior about the world now and life back then as much as I did with her. She constantly like kept going off track and I was concerned that we would not cover everything she needed to know so I told her we can talk about the world after I am done teaching her. She said alright but then I kept trying to fit talking about global warming and how people do not really have as private of a life as people used to back in her day. So, I decided to talk about the things she wanted to as I taught her and I found ways to intertwine the two things together so no time was wasted. She constantly said, “you basically don’t have a personal life nowadays since everything is done over technology and no matter how much you delete something, it still all goes to a government database.” I was surprised that she actually knew that. Anyhow, she was very happy with everything she learned and she walked away smiling.
