What An Experience

I decided to job shadow John Martin, VP. He is the Vice President of a financial and insurance firm in Massachusetts.  He told me about the future of finance and business and what he would recommend me to do in college to be successful in life and have multiple doors open at one time. This guy decided to become my mentor for a couple of hours and it had a huge impact on me because he gave me significant insight on what life is and what life is going to be in a couple of years.

Prior to this job shadow, I wanted to become a software developer during my entire junior year in high school. As senior year started, I had the same dream until my mom started telling me all the benefits of going in the business and finance industry and I decided to start thinking more about my decision of what I want to do for the rest of my life. Mr. Martin told me about his financial firm at first and what they. Then he told me about how technology is an important part of his firm and how they have a lot of software engineers that build everything and make sure nothing goes wrong. Later, we talked about how his firm has groups and they do special projects that are mainly based off technology. Him saying that his entire firm running on technology made me realize how technology is an important part of if life. That made me want to major s computer science. Then he started telling me how technology is evolving too fast and there are not many security measures to avoid hackers from breaching entire systems. He told me how we will need more people in the cyber security field and that is what made me want to go in the field of cybersecurity. I have always been interested in computers, but I just needed someone to tell me how important they actually are and how in the next ten years, life will be impossible to live without them.

Mr. Martin and I then had a long conversation about what he did in college and what I should do. One thing him and I had in common is that he majored in business but minored in computer science. I thought of doing the same when senior year began but then I decided I wanted major in cyber security and minor in finance. He made me realize there are many ways to be successful and told me to choose two fields that go hand in hand. If I picked two complete opposite fields, then it would not make sense because I would not be able to use one major to open more opportunities for the other major.
