One of those school days when I just get tired and the only thing I look forward to is helping my amazing-kind senior client(s) to feel better and uplifted. Nothing in my life has honestly been able change my mood so significantly like the way seniors do. Their happiness and smiles and “wow!”s all just make me feel like I am actually using my knowledge to help others so significantly. I never thought I would use my knowledge of technology to help others up until this year and capstone. Anyways, Betsy Cutler needed help with her Kindle Fire. She bought it about 3 months ago and told me that she did not know how to do anything besides turn it on and yeah… just got to the home page and nothing after that. So, I started off with the basics: showing her how to search through Google. Then we moved on to searching in the app store since she said, “I am a gamer so I want to know what I can do on this kindle.” I showed her what the Kindle Fire could do. Download games (: she wanted to download “Zork” and she told me about the game since I had never heard of it before; it was unfortunately not available since it was/is a board game from decades ago. However, she was well fluent with computers so she herself said she will just play it on the computer. Then she wanted to read the books she has on her library card on the Kindle. I tired downloading the app “OverDrive” since that connects libraries to devices so books can be accessible on the device the reader wants to access them on. Whenever I would try to download the app, it would say, “Click here to turn on the 1click purchase option.” I would every time and turn it on in her Amazing account but the message would not go away even after turning it on and refreshing everything. On the other hand, she wanted to download music from her computer and she asked me if she could and I showed her how it can be done. She actually proposed the idea of transferring music from the computer to her Kindle so I was surprised that she knew the method to. Then she told me how computers are a major part of her job so I understood how she was decently informed of tech.. Lastly, she wanted to transfer audiobooks from her computer to the Kindle and I told her to download the audiobooks to her computer under “Music” and then transfer them to her Kindle as music since audiobooks and music are usually played on the same program on computers usually. The session mostly consisted of talking and knowledge exchange to be honest. She was excited to go home and try everything we discussed. Mrs. Cutler said, “oh man, I have learned so much so quickly I can’t wait to go home and try all of it!”
